Rural Board Member Roundtable

In support of our rural board members, CASB will be co-hosting with the Colorado Rural Schools Alliance a series of roundtable discussions for rural board members. We recognize that there are unique challenges that rural board members face and we are here to support you in addressing those concerns. The discussion topics will be driven by our rural board members. The virtual meeting is from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

  • Important Information Discussed in regard to background checks for school volunteers:
    • Volunteers are not required to have a background check completed, although school boards certainly could adopt a policy requiring this.

C.R.S. 22-32-109.7 does require the board of education to conduct a background check “prior to the employment of any person by a school district.”  This would apply to licensed and non licensed positions. The applicant may not be convicted of felony child abuse, a crime of violence, a felony involving unlawful sexual behavior, a felony that has an underlying factual basis of domestic violence, a felony drug offense committed after August 25, 2012, felony indecent exposure. There are other requirements relating to the background check which I can explain further if you’d like.

The definition of “position of employment” in C.R.S. 22-32-109.8 does not include volunteers, it means “any job or position in which any person may be engaged in the service of a school district for salary or hourly wage, whether full time or part time and whether temporary or permanent.”
