*Using local & State Data for Effective Governance presented by Dan Jorgenson, Accountability Support Manager with CDE School Improvement and Planning and Erin Loften, Technical Supports and Planning Manager with CDE School Improvement and Planning
This session will help members understand how to use data to support the best policy, program, and practice decisions. Most importantly, we will consider how to leverage data to support conversation with stakeholders and support effective governance. Board members will develop their understanding and skills regarding the different data they may encounter including surveys, walk-throughs, and assessment results.

*Mastering the Art of Effective School Board Meetings presented by Leslie Bogar, CASB Deputy Executive Director, and Kristina Gutierrez, CASB Policy Specialist on August 24 and on September 28, Kristin Smith, Board President for Durango School District 9-R
Join us for an engaging and practical session designed for school board members who aspire to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of their board meetings. The session will provide attendees with the tools and insights necessary to conduct productive and successful meetings, fostering a collaborative environment for decision-making and governance.

*Nurturing Minds: Addressing Youth Mental Health in Our Schools presented by Dr. Stacy Pinto, Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of School Counseling at the University of Denver, Morgridge College of Education. To nurture the minds of our youth, it’s important that we move beyond simply fostering the accumulation of knowledge, toward supporting the development of every unique part of the children and adolescents whom we serve. Proactively addressing youth mental health in school settings, via methods such as acquiring a firm understanding of development and implementing intentional programming and interventions, clears the pathway to identify and address the needs of our youth early and effectively. This session will include exploration and collaboration related to mental health needs in schools, common challenges to addressing them, and options for overcoming those challenges.

*Legal Topics that Affect Your District and Students presented by Rachel Amspoker and Hilary Daniels, CASB Staff Attorneys
This session will focus on legal topics of interest to board members that impact their districts and will discuss how policies and training interact with these pressing topics.

*Secure Foundations: Advancing School Safety in Our Districts presented by Christine R. Harms MS, Director Colorado Office of School Safety, Colorado Department of Public Safety
Understanding the vast differences in resources available in our rural, suburban, and urban school districts, this workshop will provide priorities for school boards in addressing physical and psychological safety as well as messaging to parents. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to share, in small groups, success and challenges while addressing their school safety efforts.

*Strengthening Ties: Cultivating Effective Relationships Between Board Presidents and Superintendents presented by Chris Gdowski, Superintendent Adams 12 Five Star Schools and Matt Cook, CASB Director of Public Policy and Advocacy
What is one of the most important things you as an elected school board member can do to ensure great outcomes for your students? Building an effective, collaborative, and supportive relationship with your superintendent. It isn't as hard as you might think, but it does take a commitment to create an environment for success. With more than 15 years as a superintendent in the Adams 12 Five Star School District, Chris Gdowski has learned a great deal about this relationship and will share his experiences in working with his board. As a board member and board president of both the Aurora Public Schools and the CASB Board of Directors, Matt has experience working in school district governance and with CASB members as a member of your CASB staff.

*The Governance Essentials: Clarifying Roles and Responsibilities of School Board Members presented by Dr. Jubal Yennie, CASB Executive Director and Barb Clementi, CASB Past Board President and former school board member of Pueblo 60.
There are foundational (essential skills) that new and experienced board members can learn to effectively govern their school districts. Developing an excellent executive team often starts with clarifying roles and responsibilities and adhering to time honored principles of effective boardsmanship. With a combined 60+ years in public school education serving at all grade, building, and district levels, presenters Yennie and Clementi will be joined by the District #51, Mesa County Valley, Board of Education to share some of the most important skills board members can adopt that lead directly to student success.
