Applications for Dyslexia Pilot Program due on May 2

CDE is accepting applications for the 2022-23 Dyslexia Pilot Program. Applications are due by Monday, May 2. The program will include up to five schools in the year-long pilot of screening processes and implementation of intervention strategies for K – 3 students who may have dyslexia. Through the pilot program, schools will receive no-cost training and support.

CoMath Conversation: What happens when our desired math teaching strategies aren't what's promoted in other content areas?

Schools of Choice Unit Presents: Topic-Based Webinar: Adult Resilience and Stress Management within a We-Care Culture

The Adult Resilience and Stress Management within a We-Care Culture webinar will explore how school climate impacts indicators of staff wellbeing and how a culture of we-care is essential to supporting teacher resilience and stress management. This interactive webinar will provide social-emotional wellness tools and resources and is designed for anyone who works in schools or who supports schools including, but not limited to, teachers, cafeteria staff, transportation employees, administrators, paraprofessionals, office staff, and custodial staff.

Celebrate Colorado Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-6

Colorado Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2-6, which is the perfect time to thank Colorado educators for being role models for adaptability and resilience, especially in the hard times we've experienced these past few years. CDE invites everyone to express gratitude for the teachers in their schools and districts.

Next week, share a post, image or video with a sign thanking a teacher on any social media site using the hashtag #ThankATeacherCO. To help districts and schools celebrate, CDE has created a number of resources to spread the word. Access social media graphics, sample posts, and more on the Teacher Appreciation Week webpage.

We have also highlighted Teacher Appreciation Week resources that parents and families can use. Send them to the resources for parents webpage for ways they can participate.

Updated School Year 2021-22 outreach materials

The School Year 2021-22 outreach materials encourage families to provide household income information for Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer program benefits. These materials have been updated to include additional information regarding the need for households to update address and parent/guardian information as well as highlighting school meal benefit carryover status into next school year. Sponsors can use these materials to encourage households to apply by highlighting the benefits, such as potentially qualifying for P-EBT and starting the school year off with school meal benefits in place.

Celebrate School Lunch Hero Day!

School Lunch Hero Day is Friday, May 6, offering an opportunity to raise awareness and applaud the many child nutrition professionals who have a positive impact on Colorado’s students. Our school lunch heroes provide healthy, nutritious meals that fuel students throughout the day and help them be focused and ready to learn – all while overcoming massive challenges caused by supply chain and staffing shortages.

Summer and School Meal Program operations update

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced further guidance on operations for summer 2022 and School Year 2022-23:

  • Summer Food Service Program operations in 2022: state agencies may request waivers for non-congregate meal service and parent/guardian pickup when impacted by COVID-19. In addition, sponsors will be able to use other approved data sources to determine area eligibility for sites, no waiver required.
  • National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program operations in School Year 2022-23: state agencies may request waivers for non-congregate feeding and parent/guardian pickup when impacted by COVID-19 offer versus serve at the high school level, mealtime requirements, and alternate sites for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program when impacted by COVID.

Other waivers that state agencies may request include Food Service Management Company contract duration, Local Wellness Policy triennial assessment due date, and on-site reviews and reporting. CDE’s School Nutrition Unit is applying for all waivers to provide as much flexibility as possible to sponsors. These flexibilities will not be in place until the waivers are approved by USDA. Register for the next On the Menu call on Thursday, April 28, to learn about the waivers in more detail.

Consolidated Application in-person regional work sessions

The Office of Federal Programs and Supports is hosting in-person Consolidated Application work sessions. CDE staff will be available to support local education agency staff in completing the 2022-23 Consolidated Application for ESEA funds. These work sessions are designed to support LEAs in completing the application by the Thursday, June 30, deadline.

August deadline for teachers to complete evidence-based reading training

The deadline is approaching for Colorado’s educators who teach literacy to K-3 students to submit proof via the Colorado Online Licensing system that they completed their evidence-based training in teaching reading.

Teachers must complete the training by Monday, Aug. 1, and should submit their documentation by Monday, Aug. 15.

Please note that the READ Act training requirement is not mandatory to maintain a teacher’s license status in any way. The benefit of adding the READ Act training designation to an educator’s license is that the proof of completion will stay on the educator’s Colorado credentials for future years as they may change grade levels, schools, or districts.

Gilder Lehrman National History Teacher of the Year

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History seeks nominations for the 2022 National History Teacher of the Year. Each year the institute recognizes first-rate K-12 teachers who find creative ways to bring history alive in their classrooms. Winners from each state and US territory become finalists for the national award. State winners receive a $1,000 prize, an archive of classroom resources, and recognition at a ceremony in their state. The national winner, chosen from among the state winners, receives a $10,000 prize presented at a ceremony in their honor.

Decision Day is April 29

On Friday, April 29, Colorado will participate in Decision Day, which honors all the pathways that graduating high school students can take. That can include going to university, community college, occupational school or participating in an apprenticeship, or serving in the military.

Over the course of the year, high school seniors have been researching their various options, applying to programs, and filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or Colorado Application for State Financial Aid. Decision Day celebrates their hard work and recognizes their achievements and future goals.

On Friday, April 29, students, staff, and community members are encouraged to wear gear to represent their favorite schools, alma maters, or future programs to support students' future educational aspirations.

We encourage participants to share their posts all month long. To participate online, supporters can post photos on TwitterInstagram, and Facebook tagging @CoHigherEd and @MyColoradoJourney with #DecisionDayCO. Resources and graphics can be found in this Decision Day Google Drive.

Applications are being accepted for the Facility Schools Board of Education

The Office of Facility Schools seeks applicants for three open seats on the Facility Schools Board. The three open seats are:

  • One person who represents school districts within Colorado and has expertise in special education
  • One person who represents facilities within Colorado
  • One person who represents students who receive educational services provided by an approved facility school in Colorado. This member may be a person who, as a child received educational services provided by an approved facility school. This member may also be a parent of a student who is receiving, or formerly received, education services provided by an approved facility school.

The term is three years, and the board meets monthly. Members of the board serve without compensation, except for reasonable reimbursement of expenses. Make a plan to complete K-3 teacher evidence-based reading training

All kindergarten through third-grade educators who teach reading and literacy skills in Colorado must complete their evidence-based reading training requirements by Monday, Aug. 1. Documentation that they complied with the K-3 evidence-based reading training requirements should be submitted by Monday, Aug. 15.

CDE offers two no-cost training options, including a self-guided online option. The deadline to register for face-to-face Summer 2022 Training schedules is Sunday, May 1.

Four-day school week deadline is Wednesday, May 11

School districts operating a four-day school week, less than 160 scheduled days per school year, are required to submit a request for approval.

To be considered for the 2022-23 school year, complete the application via the Directory in Data Pipeline by Wednesday, May 11. Districts requesting approval are not obligated to follow their proposed calendar if their local planning is not finalized.

In addition to submitting the four-day application through Data Pipeline, districts Accredited with Priority Improvement Plan or Accredited with Turnaround Plan that is submitting a district-wide application for all schools within the district to be on a four-day school week need to submit the following additional information separately to Jhon Penn at [email protected]:

  • A copy of their respective school calendars
  • Building class schedules
  • Assembly schedules
  • Bell schedule, including lunchtime interval and professional development calendar

CDE will review the additional materials for the use and prioritization of instructional time. The executive director of field services and the associate commissioner of school quality and support must recommend approval of the application before it is forwarded to the commissioner for consideration.

School code change request deadline June 30

Districts/Local education agencies requesting a New School Code, School Name Change, School Grade Change, and/or Request for Closing a School is required to submit the application, including the superintendent's/executive director's signature, on or before Thursday, June 30, for the 2022-23 school year.

The process for a school code change request is as follows:

  • Request is submitted, including the superintendent's/executive director's signature
  • School Code Review Committee reviews the request, the decision is made to approve or deny
  • Approval/denial letter is emailed to the superintendent/executive director and submitter
  • Changes become active in the Directory in Data Pipeline as of Friday, July 1, for the 2022-23 school year

Failure to submit the request before the June 30 deadline could result in a denial.

Submit your application for 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year

The application for the 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year is now available. Each year, the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled K-12 classroom teacher to represent the entire profession in the state. The selected teacher will also automatically become Colorado's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Applications for this honor will be due on Wednesday, June 29.

Unified Improvement Plan 101 video series

Watch the Unified Improvement Plan 101 video series for an introduction to the elements of the school UIP and the UIP online system. The series consists of eight 5-10 minute videos.

Unified Improvement Planning Resources

The Unified Improvement Planning Handbook and Quality Criteria rubrics have been updated for the 2022-23 school year. Districts are advised to reference these resources to inform their improvement planning and UIP development.
