Technical Advisory Panel At-Large membership opportunity

CDE seeks one at-large member to serve on the Technical Advisory Panel for Longitudinal Growth, which advises the department on the implementation of the Colorado Growth Model and the Educational Accountability Act.

Interested applicants must demonstrate some level of expertise in educational assessment, growth (including the Colorado growth model), research and/or accountability.

TAP members are appointed by the Commissioner of Education and serve three-year terms without compensation. Candidates must submit a statement of interest and resume. All applications are due by Friday, June 30. The selected candidate will be notified prior to Friday, July 14.

Facility Schools Board Seat Vacancy

The Office of Facility Schools seeks applicants for the recently vacated state placement agency seat on the Facility Schools Board. The open seat represents state-level child placement agencies.

Members of the board serve for three years and meet monthly without compensation, except for reasonable reimbursement of expenses.

Temporary loan forgiveness program expands eligibility

The eligibility for the Temporary Educator Loan Forgiveness Program has been expanded from just licensed teachers and counselors to include principals and special service providers. Additionally, House Bill 23-1001 broadened the requirements for the program. The Colorado Department of Higher Education is accepting applications through Thursday, June 15.

Application deadline extended for the 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year

The application deadline for the 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year has been extended to Friday, June 16.

Each year, the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled K-12 classroom teacher. The selected teacher will also automatically become Colorado's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Early Childhood Leadership Commission Town Hall

The Early Childhood Leadership Commission will host a town hall at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, to provide updates about the Department of Early Childhood and Universal Preschool Program implementation process. Join via Zoom. Spanish language interpretation will be available.

Third round of FAFSA/CASFA Completion Grant Open

A third round of the FAFSA/CASFA Completion Grant reopened on May 22, and will remain open through August. This grant awards up to $15,000 per year with a performance period ending June 30, 2025.

2023-24 Formal Variance Waiver to Blended Learning and Supplemental Online Courses

Districts and schools may request a Variance Waiver to the posted guidance regarding Blended Learning Courses and Supplemental Online Courses as outlined in the Student October Count Audit Resource Guide.

Districts and schools intending to use the waiver must notify CDE before Friday, Aug. 11, by completing the intent survey. Participating districts and schools will then submit the required documentation forms within Syncplicity between October-December 2023.

Healthy School Meals for All resources for districts and schools

Districts that choose to participate in The Healthy School Meals for All program during the 2023-24 school year can offer free breakfast and lunch to all students at participating schools. Learn more about the program and how your district can get involved on the HSMFA webpage.

Even though free meals will be provided to all students in participating schools, it is important for families to continue to provide household income information. Doing so enables districts to receive as much federal funding as possible. To support districts’ outreach efforts, CDE's School Nutrition Office has created a communications toolkit aimed at encouraging families to provide household income information as requested by their district.

Apply for local food program funding

CDE's School Nutrition Unit has approximately $35,000 remaining to distribute to districts for the purchase of Colorado grown, raised, processed and value-added products.

Applications are due Friday, May 16. Small, rural districts are encouraged to apply. Selected sponsors will receive funding in fall 2023 at the rate of $.05 per lunch served in School Year 2021-22. Technical assistance is provided to help sponsors menu plan, forecast and procure local foods. Sponsors are ineligible to participate if over 2,150,000 meals were served last school year.

Funding opportunity for elementary social studies educators

The Educating for American Democracy Initiative has $600,000 in grants available for history and civic education for students in grades K-5. This opportunity provides funds to help implement an EAD-aligned project focused on K-5 students as part of their formal educational program during regular school hours in underserved communities.

The application deadline is Wednesday, May 31.

May Co-Literacy conversation

The next Co-Literacy conversation is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, via Zoom.

The conversations include a problem of practice, a presentation, breakout sessions with guided questions and additional resources to help educators and leaders implement evidence-based practices in their schools and districts.

Free lessons plans for secondary teachers to teach about the Colorado Constitution

A free series of lesson plans has been developed to support secondary teachers in meeting the revised 2022 Colorado Academic Standards in civics, which includes evidence outcomes on the Colorado Constitution. The lesson plans cover Colorado statehood, how amendments are added to the state constitution and the structure and function of Colorado's government and were written by Colorado teachers: Candice Halvorsen, Kelly Jones-Wagy, Alyson Koerner, Kurt Knierim, Stephanie Walsh and Sam Westerdale.

Apply for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program helps eligible elementary schools provide fresh fruits and vegetables to children during the school year. Interested districts may apply to operate FFVP in the Colorado Nutrition Portal beginning Thursday, June 1.

Elementary schools qualify based on the following criteria:

  • Participation in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program.
  • Have at least 50% of students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals based on the 2022-23 PK-12 free and reduced-price data.
  • Operate FFVP for the entire school year.

Request for applications and recommendations: Colorado Educator Talent Pool

CDE seeks applications and recommendations for the Colorado Educator Talent Pool. Elementary and secondary educators who have a minimum of five years of experience and who demonstrate unusual instructional and leadership abilities are encouraged to submit their name for consideration. The recommendation deadline is Friday, June 2.

The Colorado Educator Talent Pool is a list of candidates for advisory boards, task forces and special recognition programs. Your recommendations will identify educators who will be of great value to your community and state and who may also ultimately be considered for a prestigious recognition.

Today is National School Nurse Appreciation Day

Show school nurses appreciation today on National School Nurse Day. This day has been set aside since 1972 to recognize school nurses and to foster a better understanding of their role.

Nominate an exceptional teacher to be the 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year

Do you know an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled K-12 teacher? Nominate them to apply for the 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year award by Monday, May 15.

Each year the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an outstanding K-12 classroom teacher. The selected teacher will automatically become Colorado’s nominee for the National Teacher of the Year Program.
