The U.S. Department of Education sent the following notice to all chief state school officers yesterday about monthly surveys to school districts and public school staff, pertaining to COVID-19 recovery efforts.

Members needed for Committee of Practitioners 

The Committee of Practitioners  is a critical stakeholder group for CDE's Federal Programs with a primary purpose of advising CDE regarding its implementation of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, reauthorized as the Every Student Succeeds Act. The CoP operates to identify issues across regions of the state and facilitate two-way communication between CDE and the preK-12 education community throughout Colorado.

The membership of the committee includes representatives from local education agencies, non-public schools, and charter schools. Members include school and district administrators, teachers, parents, and members of local school boards. Committee members serve for an initial three-year term with the opportunity to extend membership beyond the initial term. A minimum of four meetings will be held per year. The National School Boards Action Center today released a national public opinion poll on public education. You can access the poll by going directly to the NSBAC website at https://nsbac.org The findings are from a nationwide survey of 1,000 likely 2022 voters with oversamples of 100 African American, 100 Latinx, 100 AAPI, 100 Native American, and 100 parents of school-age children who are likely 2022 voters. The poll results are available to the public.

 Some highlights include:

• Voters continue to value the job public schools are doing in their community with 55 percent rating them positively.
• Learning loss among students due to the COVID-19 pandemic is a key priority, with 88 percent saying it is a problem, including 65 percent who say it is a "very big" problem.
• 89 percent of Democrats, 73 percent of Republicans, and 70 percent of independents view easier access to technology and broadband as important. The largest obstacle for public school districts, named by 66 percent of voters as challenging, was having quality broadband and internet access at home to attend school online.
• 59 percent of voters think funding for public schools should be increased. Of those who believe it should be increased, 86 percent would support an increase in funding even if it meant they would pay more in taxes.
• 61 percent of voters say it is better to allocate funds to improving public education and schools, compared to only 18 percent who support vouchers to pay for students to attend private or religiously affiliated schools.
• 74 percent say a lack of personalized learning focused on individual needs is a problem.

Department of Early Childhood Transition Planning

The Early Childhood Leadership Commission (ECLC) is tasked with approving a plan to transition to the new agency, as well as to guide the state’s new universal preschool program. As part of this transition process, the ECLC will engage a wide range of stakeholders—including parents/families, members of the early childhood workforce, providers, school districts, human services leaders, and others—to ensure recommendations are representative of the unique and diverse voices across Colorado. You can learn more about these efforts here (Spanish version here).

You’re invited to participate in this important process by completing an online interest form in English or Spanish to share the perspective you would like to bring to the Transition Advisory Group or one of its Subgroups no later than June 21, 2021.

Federal education officials highlight a host of pandemic-induced inequities in a lengthy report touching on everything from learning loss to mental health consequences. The department also announced a series of “equity summits” starting June 22 and regulations to ensure pandemic stimulus money is distributed equitably to districts and schools.
