State of School Safety Report

Safe and Sound Schools Delivers the
2021 State of School Safety Report
We are proud to share the results of the annual State of School Safety Report in partnership with Raptor Technologies and the Jeffco/DeAngelis Foundation. The goal of this year’s report was to assess perceptions, issues, and gaps in safety as students head back to school this Fall.
The study seeks to better understand how different members of the school community - students and their families, teachers, administrators, and other safety officials - perceive the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health, gun violence, and other top safety concerns. It is Safe and Sound Schools’ mission to share this data to help identify and implement solutions for crisis prevention, response, and recovery.
Fall 2021’s return to in-person learning will be an unprecedented one, and our findings show that attitudes regarding safety need to unify before campuses reopen. Here are a few responses that stand out:
  • More than 25% of administrators are either not sure or feel schools are unprepared for an active shooter attack.
  • Students and parents overwhelmingly indicate that they have experienced both anxiety and depression as a result of the pandemic.
  • However, close to 90% of students believe there are mental health resources available at schools, while parents are slightly less confident at 71%.
  • Only 65% of parents believe schools are proactive on safety awareness, compared to 94% of school administrators.
Click here to download and read the full 2021 State of School Safety Report.
We hope you will share this report with community leaders and address your school’s preparedness this Fall. For more ways to make your school safer, head to safeandsoundschools.org.

Colorado State Board of Education sends letter to Governor Polis

On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, the Colorado State Board of Education sent a letter to Governor Polis encourages "encourage little-to-no state-level regulation of in-person learning next year." It goes on to read, "The experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as in previous years of experience mitigating influenza and other infectious disease outbreaks, have taught superintendents and their staff what strategies work best in their communities. During the upcoming 2021-22 school year, superintendents and local boards must have the authority to make decisions in support of unrestricted in-person learning."

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and the State Board of Education need your input and perspective to ensure Colorado makes the most impactful use of federal funds the state will receive to support students, teachers and schools recovering from the interruption to our schools as a result of COVID-19.

CDE will be hosting these virtual meetings to share information about the federal funds the state will be receiving and to spend the majority of the time listening to attendees and learning from your experiences. We’ll explore questions in a variety of areas to hear directly from attendees about the pandemic’s impact on students and educators to inform the use of these one time federal funds.

NSBA Poll Results

The National School Boards Action Center today released a national public opinion poll on public education. You can access the poll by going directly to the NSBAC website at https://nsbac.org The findings are from a nationwide survey of 1,000 likely 2022 voters with oversamples of 100 African American, 100 Latinx, 100 AAPI, 100 Native American, and 100 parents of school-age children who are likely 2022 voters. The poll results are available to the public.

 Some highlights include:

  • Voters continue to value the job public schools are doing in their community with 55 percent rating them positively.
  • Learning loss among students due to the COVID-19 pandemic is a key priority, with 88 percent saying it is a problem, including 65 percent who say it is a "very big" problem.
  • 89 percent of Democrats, 73 percent of Republicans, and 70 percent of independents view easier access to technology and broadband as important. The largest obstacle for public school districts, named by 66 percent of voters as challenging, was having quality broadband and internet access at home to attend school online.
  • 59 percent of voters think funding for public schools should be increased. Of those who believe it should be increased, 86 percent would support an increase in funding even if it meant they would pay more in taxes.
  • 61 percent of voters say it is better to allocate funds to improving public education and schools, compared to only 18 percent who support vouchers to pay for students to attend private or religiously affiliated schools.
  • 74 percent say a lack of personalized learning focused on individual needs is a problem.

The Future of Preschool in Colorado newsletter

Last November, Colorado voters passed a ballot measure that will pay for all children in their year before kindergarten to attend preschool at least 10 hours per week. With the program beginning in two years, policymakers must act now to identify how universal preschool will work.

Knowing this, Governor Polis asked the Colorado Children’s Campaign to lead a process of gathering input from state and local leaders, early care and education advocates, preschool providers, educators, and families. Early Milestones Colorado supported this process by assisting with data, research, and policy insights. We also produced seven topical briefs to share findings from the Future of Preschool in Colorado Engagement Process

Published in April, the first three briefs provided an overview of the work and explored universal preschool governance and funding. We are now pleased to offer the remaining four briefs of the series, which discuss the early childhood workforce, program quality, participation, and community input.

READ THE BRIEFS

The final brief, which summarizes community input from more than 60 listening sessions, is also available in Spanish.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF PRESCHOOL

Explorando el futuro del preescolar en Colorado

Estimados amigos y colegas,

Department of Early Childhood Transition Planning

The Early Childhood Leadership Commission (ECLC) is tasked with approving a plan to transition to the new agency, as well as to guide the state’s new universal preschool program. As part of this transition process, the ECLC will engage a wide range of stakeholders—including parents/families, members of the early childhood workforce, providers, school districts, human services leaders, and others—to ensure recommendations are representative of the unique and diverse voices across Colorado. You can learn more about these efforts here (Spanish version here).

You’re invited to participate in this important process by completing an online interest form in English or Spanish to share the perspective you would like to bring to the Transition Advisory Group or one of its Subgroups no later than June 21, 2021.
