The TREP program, created by Senate Bill 21-185, allows for qualified students in an educator pathway to receive funding for up to two years of college tuition. Twelfth-grade students who are enrolled in at least one course in the educator pathway can qualify for this opportunity. Interested districts should submit an Intent to Participate by Monday, April 11. See the TREP website for more information.

Encourage future educators to sign up with TEACH Colorado for access to resources to get a head start on their careers. TEACH Colorado provides a variety of free resources to aspiring educators. Make sure the future teachers in your community are connected by encouraging them to sign up for free.

Submit a nomination for Serving Up Science

Submit a nomination for school nutrition professionals in your district to attend "Serving up Science: The Path to Safe Food in Schools" by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22. This four-day program developed by experts in food science at Kansas State University and USDA takes place June 20-24 in Manhattan, Kan. This program equips professionals with science-based food safety information to take back to their cafeterias. Attendees will learn how to overcome food safety challenges and become leaders who can establish a food safety culture in their districts.

All travel costs are the responsibility of the participant or their employer. However, all other program expenses including meals and lodging are provided.

Local Food Program application now open

Applications for districts to participate in the Local Food Program for School Year 2022-23 are open. The LFP is a statewide pilot that provides funding for school food authorities to purchase Colorado-grown, raised, processed, and value-added products.

Register now for an informational webinar about the program at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

Districts considering applying should complete the intent to apply form by Friday, April 1.

The application closes Friday, April 15.

Advanced Educational Identification of Autism Training

Dr. Bryn Harris will present the workshop "Educational Identification of Complex ASD Cases: Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Evaluations" from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, and 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. This workshop will provide school professionals with advanced training pertaining to considerations regarding ASD assessment practices when working with traditionally underserved children. Participants must attend both sessions to receive a certificate of attendance (six CDE hours). Partial credit will not be given.

This training is available to only those who have completed the CDE Educational Identification of ASD Toolkit training. Registration is limited. Priority will go to those who have not previously attended.

K-3 teacher evidence-based reading training requirements

All kindergarten through third-grade educators who teach reading and literacy skills in Colorado must complete their evidence-based reading training requirements by Monday, Aug. 1. Documentation that they complied with the K-3 evidence-based reading training requirements should be submitted by Monday, Aug. 15.

Licensed teachers should submit documentation through the Colorado Online Licensing system. Non-licensed educators will submit their request for documentation approval form via Google form.

Reviewers are needed for the Mentor Program Grant, a program that develops, supports, and expands mentoring programs for new teachers. Approximately $9.5 million will be available during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Reviewers will score and provide feedback on grant applications.

Update on K-12 Education Accountability Systems Performance Evaluation

The Colorado Office of the State Auditor and its contractor, the Human Resources Research Organization, continue to work on the performance evaluation of Colorado's K-12 education accountability systems required by House Bill 21-1294.

HumRRO will engage with districts, schools, and parents to invite participation in online surveys and, in some cases, virtual interviews and focus groups. Communication about these activities will be sent the week of March 21 directly to district superintendents for further dissemination to district and school personnel and parents, as applicable.

Participation in the surveys, interviews, and focus groups is voluntary. However, the OSA and HumRRO encourage districts, schools, and parents to recognize the value that their participation will have for providing information to the Colorado General Assembly about the effectiveness of certain aspects of Colorado's current K-12 education accountability systems.

New Learning Cohort: Leading for Engaging, Rigorous Instruction

CDE is offering a math and English language arts learning cohort for school and district leaders from May through the 2022-23 school year that will focus on developing understanding, tools, and action planning. Participation in the cohort includes some funding for participation and implementation. The learning cohort will convene for five sessions through May 2023 to learn, share and observe practices of other schools, action plan and discuss strategies for implementation. Cohorts will meet via Zoom and/or in-person sessions.

The Special Education Fiscal Advisory Committee (SEFAC) has a vacancy for a small rural or BOCES fiscal member.

SEFAC was established in 2006 by House Bill 06-1375 and is the Special Education Fiscal Advisory Committee. The committee is charged with the allocation of an annual appropriation, currently $4 million. The committee has the discretion to award grants to administrative units for students with disabilities who qualify as “high cost” students. In addition to analyzing the high-cost applications and awarding grants to administrative units, the SEFAC produces an annual report to the legislature which includes special education data from the collection year, current fiscal year, and changes the committee recommends regarding the manner of distributing funds to Administrative Units for special education programs through the Exceptional Children’s Educational Act (ECEA).

Join ICAP Champions Kristin Hefflon, student services coordinator with St. Vrain Valley Schools, and Allison Lusero Hoffman, director of counseling in Adams 12 Five Star Schools, who will lead the discussion and who have collaborated with the CDE Office of Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness and CTE in Colorado. Some participants may be eligible for five hours of continuing education credit.

CDE thanks the nearly 44,000 educators and staff, who completed the Teaching and Learning Conditions in Colorado survey.

Districts that met the threshold of at least 50% participation and/or have schools that met these criteria will receive an embargoed link this spring to access data. Data will be available publicly via the TLCC Survey website by the end of April or in early May.

A webinar to share out statewide trends and resources for schools and districts to dive into their results will take place in May. CDE-facilitated work sessions are also available by request.

Now open: School Counselor Corps Grant program Request for Applications

The 2022-23 School Counselor Corps Grant Request for Application is available for education providers. Approximately $600,000 will be available for the new RFA, which will focus on planning in the first year and implementation in the second, third and fourth years of the grant.

The School Counselor Corps Grant program seeks to increase the availability of effective school-based counseling to increase the graduation rate within the state and increase the percentage of students who appropriately prepare for, apply to and continue into postsecondary education.

This RFA is released prior to the approval of a four-year grant cycle and is contingent on any funding appropriated to the School Counselor Corps Grant program in May 2022. For this program to continue, funds must be appropriated for the program during the 2022 Colorado Legislative Session.
