P-EBT data collections

The fall Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer collection closed on May 6. The fall collection captures student-level data from August 2022 through December 2022. The spring P-EBT collection opens Monday, May 9, and closes Friday, June 17. Information about the spring P-EBT collection will be provided in upcoming CDE Town Hall training sessions.

CDE Town Halls are held every Thursday at 9 a.m. Visit the Data Pipeline Town Hall webpage to access training links and view the upcoming agendas.

August deadline for teachers to complete evidence-based reading training

The deadline is approaching for Colorado’s educators who teach literacy to K-3 students to submit proof via the Colorado Online Licensing system that they completed their evidence-based training in teaching reading.

Teachers must complete the training by Monday, Aug. 1, and should submit their documentation by Monday, Aug. 15.

Please note that the READ Act training requirement is not mandatory to maintain a teacher’s license status in any way. The benefit of adding the READ Act training designation to an educator’s license is that the proof of completion will stay on the educator’s Colorado credentials for future years as they may change grade levels, schools, or districts.

Department of Early Childhood opens applications for Local Coordinating Organizations

The Department of Early Childhood has opened applications for Local Coordinating Organizations. LCOs will coordinate the early childhood system in their community, including the mixed delivery system of Universal Preschool. A proposed LCO map and school district guide has been released along with the application. The application is due June 20, 2022. The transition team will be offering virtual office hours to answer applicant questions Mondays at 12:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Submit your application for the 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year

The application for the 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year is available. Each year, the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled K-12 classroom teacher to represent the entire profession in the state. The selected teacher will also automatically become Colorado's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Applications for this honor are due by Wednesday, June 29.

TLCC results now available

Interactive results from the biennial Teaching and Learning Conditions in Colorado survey are now live at www.tlccsurvey.org for the 111 districts and 1,040 schools that met participation thresholds. The 2022 TLCC survey results include trend data for each question from 2018 and 2020 when available. New questions specifically for education support professionals and questions related to pandemic impacts, including student and staff wellbeing, are included at the end of the survey.

CDE staff is available to provide technical assistance, training, and facilitated work sessions by request. In addition, the survey vendor is available to provide data reports and report assistance.

Social studies standards review committee presentation date change

The presentation of the final recommendations for revisions to Colorado’s social studies standards is being changed from the May to the June State Board of Education meeting. The change provides board members and the public adequate time to review proposed changes prior to the presentation from the social studies committee.

Teaching and Learning CoLabs

This summer, teachers, and leaders are invited to attend Teaching and Learning CoLabs, a new kind of no-cost event that brings together stakeholders from districts, higher education, professional teaching and other organizations, and CDE. The dates and host sites for this summer's CoLabs are:

· Thursday, June 2, hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction
· Wednesday, June 8, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley
· Tuesday, June 21, hosted by CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo

Schools are encouraged to attend a CoLab in teams, with teachers representing multiple grades and/or content areas. Focus content areas for 2022 include English language arts, health, and physical education, mathematics, science, and computer science. Leadership-focused sessions will be provided for principals and other school leaders.

2022 Colorado PAEMST Finalists

Congratulations to the Colorado state finalists for the 2021-22 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching:

  • Mathematics: Amanda Jaquette, Brown International Academy, Denver Public Schools
  • Mathematics: Amanda Sutton, Lesher Middle School, Poudre School District
  • Science: Allison LeWarne, Sunset Elementary School, Moffat County School District
  • Science: Autumn Rivera, Glenwood Springs Middle School, Roaring Fork Schools

These teachers' applications will be reviewed by a national selection committee convened by the National Science Foundation. PAEMST awardees receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a $10,000 award from NSF, and an all-expenses-paid trip for an award ceremony and professional learning and networking opportunities in Washington, D.C.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the highest honors bestowed by the U.S. government for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science teachers. The Awards were established by Congress in 1983 and the President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year.

Celebrate Colorado Teacher Appreciation Week

This week, May 2-6, is Colorado Teacher Appreciation Week, the perfect time to thank Colorado educators for their resilience, adaptability, and dedication to our students. CDE invites everyone to participate by giving thanks to the teachers in their lives.

The Colorado School Safety Resource Center is holding a free Summer Safety Symposium

The free virtual symposium brings together campus safety professionals; including administrators, mental health staff, law enforcement, security, emergency management, prevention and advocacy specialists, Title IX Coordinators, facilities, and IT professionals. This symposium was initially designed for staff of Institutions of Higher Education, but faculty members from K-12 schools and districts will also benefit, as the topics are directly relevant to their work.

Final School and District Accountability Committee networking event is May 10

Join CDE, school and district staff, and accountability committee members to discuss School Accountability Committee and District Accountability Committee timelines, recruiting membership and onboarding plans in preparation for 2022-23 school year. This will be an opportunity to hear what basic expectations are for committees as well as promising practices from other committees around the state. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, via Zoom.

Make a plan to complete K-3 teacher evidence-based reading training

All kindergarten through third-grade educators who teach reading and literacy skills in Colorado must complete their evidence-based reading training requirements by Monday, Aug. 1. Documentation that they complied with the K-3 evidence-based reading training requirements should be submitted by Monday, Aug. 15.

CDE offers a free self-guided training to all K-3 educators.

Office of Educator Preparation seeks stakeholder input on Adapted PE Standards

The Educator Preparation office will be looking at Adapted Physical Education endorsement standards and is putting together a stakeholder working group to provide input. The workday for the stakeholder group will be held virtually starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19.

We’re seeking participation from a variety of stakeholders, including:
  • District/BOCES PE teachers, special education directors, or teachers
  • Colorado physical education and special education preparation programs
  • CDE Physical Education and Special Education experts
  • Community and educational advocates
Interested participants are asked to complete the interest form by Monday, May 16. Notifications will be sent out to all interested participants on Tuesday, May 17, with the agenda and Zoom information.

TLCC results emboargoed until May 11

Districts and their schools that met reporting thresholds received access to the embargoed Teaching and Learning Conditions Colorado survey results this past week. An email was sent to superintendents and accountability and HR contacts with access information to access the reports. Results should be shared with appropriate district and school-level staff. The data will be available publicly on Wednesday, May 11.

Applications for Dyslexia Pilot Program due on May 2

CDE is accepting applications for the 2022-23 Dyslexia Pilot Program. Applications are due by Monday, May 2. The program will include up to five schools in the year-long pilot of screening processes and implementation of intervention strategies for K – 3 students who may have dyslexia. Through the pilot program, schools will receive no-cost training and support.

CoMath Conversation: What happens when our desired math teaching strategies aren't what's promoted in other content areas?

Join the May Co Math Conversation at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. This conversation will give participants time to discuss examples, explore some crosswalks and weigh the pros and cons of different perspectives and approaches.

Schools of Choice Unit Presents: Topic-Based Webinar: Adult Resilience and Stress Management within a We-Care Culture
