CDE is accepting recommendations for distinguished educators. These educators may be candidates for advisory boards, task forces, and special recognition programs. Recommendations for elementary educators new to the profession, who demonstrate unusual instructional and leadership ability are especially needed. A minimum of five years in education is a must. Candidates are building-level personnel. They are typically classroom teachers, as opposed to specialists, and are recognized by peers and supervisors as unique in their growth. Occasionally a principal or specialist is considered. Educators who are outstanding but have not received other recognition are of special interest. Recommendation deadline is Friday, June 20.

Dyslexia Working Group Membership
Apply for one of four membership positions available on the Dyslexia Working Group. The working group was established in the 2019 legislative session by the Colorado General Assembly through House Bill 19-1134. The legislation directs the Commissioner of Education to convene a Dyslexia Working Group to improve the identification of and educational support for students with dyslexia to improve their educational outcomes.
CDE is seeking to fill the following memberships:
- Rural Principal
- A school district literacy specialist
- A parent of a child who is identified as having dyslexia and a disability
- Director of special education
Online applications will be accepted at through Friday, June 17. CDE will notify applicants no later than Friday, June 24.
To achieve a diverse membership, applications will be reviewed based on the consideration of the geographical representation and individual knowledge and experience for the required representative of the working group.

Applications requested for the Expelled and At-Risk Student Services grant program
This grant opportunity is to provide educational services to expelled students, students who are identified as at-risk expulsion or at-risk of dropping out of school due to chronic absenteeism.
Eligible applicants include school districts, charter schools, alternative schools within school districts, nonpublic schools, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, and facility schools. Nonpublic schools may apply for a grant pursuant to this section only to fund educational services that have been approved by the state board pursuant to section 22-2-107.
The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept., 2.

This summer, teachers, and leaders are invited to attend Teaching and Learning CoLabs, a new kind of no-cost event that brings together stakeholders from districts, higher education and professional teaching, and other organizations. The dates and host sites for this summer's CoLabs are:
- Thursday, June 2, hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction
- Wednesday, June 8, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley
- Tuesday, June 21, hosted by CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo
Schools are encouraged to attend a CoLab in teams, with teachers representing multiple grades and/or content areas. Focus content areas for 2022 will include English language arts, health, and physical education, mathematics, science, and computer science. Leadership-focused sessions will be provided for principals and other school leaders.

Variance Waivers granted during the 2021-22 school year are good for two years; however, schools/districts needing an additional year must still complete a formal request by Wednesday, June 15.
Schools/districts that need a variance waiver for the first time may also submit a request by Monday, Aug., 15.

The Office of Standards and Instructional Support invites all Colorado educators to participate in a voluntary survey so that the department better understands the needs of the educators currently in the field. Please share this with others who can contribute. The Professional Development Needs Survey will be open through the end of June.

Priority will be given to applicants early in their careers and working in rural Colorado or in a content-shortage area anywhere in Colorado. Applicants will be eligible for up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness annually. This is a two-year program. Applicants must re-apply in the second year to be considered for an award in that cycle. Applications submitted for consideration of the Educator Loan Forgiveness program between Dec 15, 2021 - April 15, 2022, will be reviewed for eligibility for this program as well. There is no need to submit another application.

TEACH Colorado Summer Scholarships

CDE recently released the ESSER Transportation Assistance Grant Program that will provide funding to help students attending low-performing schools in chronically low-performing districts access high-quality learning at a higher-performing school in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years.
Colorado school districts, BOCES, charter schools and nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for this two-year program. Potential forms of transportation assistance could include, but are not limited to:
- Direct transportation;
- Coordination of transportation services; and
- Reimbursements for actual transportation costs incurred by families through reimbursement or gas cards.
The Intent to Apply is due Tuesday, May 31. An applicant webinar will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31. The Intent to Apply is encouraged, but not required to apply.
Applications are being accepted through Tuesday, June 21. All applicants will be notified of their award status by Friday, July 1, in order to implement the program for the 2022-23 school year.

All public, private, and tribal schools in the 50 states and five U.S. territories are invited to apply at nlga.awardsplatform.com. Funding will be awarded to schools to support STEM-related activities, programming, curriculum, equipment, and other expenses.

As part of this legislation, CDE will be required to apply to the USDA’s Direct Certification Medicaid Pilot Program. CDE’s School Nutrition Unit is in the process of completing the application and anticipates the addition of Medicaid data in the direct certification system no later than School Year 2023-24. On May 5, the Food and Nutrition Services’ Civil Rights Division issued a memorandum on Bostock v. Clayton County and its application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's FNS Programs. The memorandum informed FNS program recipients that the prohibition of discrimination based on sex in Title IX and the Food and Nutrition Act includes gender identity and sexual orientation. The changes impact the USDA Nondiscrimination Statement and the And Justice for All posters.
All documents, pamphlets, websites, etc. must be updated as follows:
- Websites must be updated by Wednesday, Aug. 3.
- Documents, pamphlets, brochures, etc., using 2015 NDS language must be updated when current supply on hand is exhausted or by Sept. 30, 2023.
The Affordable Connectivity Program lowers internet costs for eligible families
The Foundation for Excellence in Education has developed resources to assist districts in sharing the program with families who may qualify for this free/reduced-priced internet service. The flyers and social media images in the toolkit are designed so districts are able to place their logo on both the Summer and Back to School campaigns before sharing.
